The 3D Robotics Solo drone is truly a game changing vehicle for cinematographers and videographers alike. 3D Robotics has created the first drone to have in flight camera controls, autonomous flight with while the operator can separately operate the camera and use functions like programmable tilt, pan and yaw settings. Need to capture an epic shot of an oncoming surfer, mountain biker or snowboarder? Set the 3DR’s flight path, let the solo fly itself and the remote control converts into full camera control. This feature allows even the novice users to get amazing cinematic reveals and camera control while the drone flies itself.
Safety has been a major priority for the solo drone as this is the first drone to offer 3 points of redundancy for every single sensor on board, and on the ground. Solo is controlled by two 1.9ghz linux based computers that record over 500 points of data for the pilot. This may sound minute in nature, but for commercial pilots, the flight log data will prove to be useful to save money on insurance.
3DR has taken steps to make equipment upgrade even easier for drone pilots. 3DR will be the first upgradeable drone to enter the consumer market. With past setups like with DJI’s phantom series, pilots would have to buy an entire new platform just to get better features. The solo has been designed to be expandable. The arms on the solo contain the motor and esc pods to allow for easy accessibility. These pods can be easily pulled off and replaced, and upgraded for larger payloads or larger cameras.
Solo is also the first to have an accessory bay to allow for lights, payload lifting tools or even additional sensors for commercial purposes. Solo has an optional sonar sensor that measures the ground around the vehicle to allow for the smoothest flight. Unlike DJI’s setup that only works within a few feet of the ground, solo is able to see a much greater distance up to 9 meters up. Multiple solo drones could even use LED lights in the accessory bay to light a scene for the most avid filmmakers. Even swarm the solo’s together to autonomously light a moving scene, that may be an industry first as well.
The solo may look to compete with the phantom series of drones from DJI, but we see it as a competitor with the Inspire 1 when it comes to speed and payload capacity. The solo tops out at 55mph and is able to conquer winds up to 35 mph. This game changing drone will allow those who shoot action sports, real estate and even large productions to have more access to once impossible shots.
