Nov. 16, 2006 – Page, Arizona, November 16th – The Colorado River Day Float Trip and Canyon River Adventure tours have wrapped for the 2006 season. The final departure of these popular Grand Canyon tours was Wednesday, November 15th. Originating at Grand Canyon South Rim, these all-day scenic tour packages include a 15-mile calm water trip down the Colorado River from the base of Glen Canyon Dam to Lees Ferry. Both excursions are extremely popular with families visiting the Grand Canyon, Flagstaff, Williams and Sedona. Trips are scheduled to resume operation in March of 2007.
Travelers coming to the Grand Canyon area at this time of year still have a few opportunities to experience Colorado River rafting. Those passing through Lake Powell, about 140 miles Northeast of Grand Canyon South Rim, can take part in a half-day float trip through Glen Canyon. This Colorado River trip is about 4.5 hours in length and departs from downtown Page, Arizona through the end of November.
The Black Canyon Adventure, which originates at the Hacienda Resort just outside Las Vegas, covers a 12-mile stretch of smooth water from the base of Hoover Dam to Willow Beach. The trip is approximately 6 hours long from Boulder City and back; those staying on the Las Vegas Strip or Downtown may add hotel shuttle service to their tour for a nominal fee. The Black Canyon Colorado River Float Trip is available through Sunday, November 26th. Its seasonal hiatus is expected to run through February 2007.
Grand Canyon West, a developing tourism center on the Hualapai Indian Reservation, offers visitors the opportunity to helicopter down to the canyon floor for 30-minute pontoon boat rides on the Colorado River. These trips also take place on smooth water and are available year-round, weather permitting. Grand Canyon West is 120 miles from Las Vegas. Private vehicles are allowed there, but the primary access road to the area is unpaved. Tours to Grand Canyon West are available from Las Vegas, Boulder City, Grand Canyon South Rim, and Phoenix.
One-day Grand Canyon whitewater rafting trips from Peach Springs (near Grand Canyon West) will resume in March of 2007. Multi-day Colorado River white water rafting trips begin running again in mid-April.
