Nov. 23, 2006 – High Visibility Packaging forecasts to 2010 & 2015
US demand to grow 5.1% annually through 2010
US demand for high visibility packaging, including clamshell, blister and other types, is expected to increase 5.1 percent annually to $8.5 billion in 2010, representing 31 billion units. Gains will be driven by favorable advances in consumer spending along with the growing influence of mass market retailers that tend to favor blister packs, clamshells and other high visibility containers for their theft and tamper deterrence and ability to effectively showcase products.
Best opportunities in carded blister packs, clamshells
The best opportunities are anticipated for carded blister packs and clamshells, which together accounted for 58 percent of high visibility packaging in 2005. Clamshell demand is expected to increase 5.3 percent annually to $2.7 billion in 2010, bolstered by strong gains in food
markets such as fresh produce and prepared foods. In addition, clamshells will benefit from their upscale appearance; thick, rigid construction, which is particularly suited to larger, heavier items; and ability to deter theft and tampering, which is advantageous for retailers offering minimal customer service ands supervision. Blister pack demand will advance 6.8 percent annually to $2.5 billion in 2010, stimulated by healthy gains for pharmaceutical blister packs resulting from regulatory issues associated with unit dose packaging. In addition, blister pack demand in consumer goods markets will benefit from growing interest in sustain- able packaging (e.g., packaging that utilizes renewable, biodegradable and/or recycled materials). Because they utilize less plastic than clamshells, blisters are more amenable to sustainable packaging initiatives.
Food to remain top market, drugs/medical to lead gains
Food will account for about half of the high visibility packaging market based on extensive use in such markets as baked goods, prepared foods and fresh produce. Growth will be assisted by rising consumer interest in convenient, prepared foods like home meal replacements, which are becoming increasingly available in supermarkets and other venues and which frequently utilize clamshells and similar high visibility containers.
