initiative to grow economic impact of tourism

With millions of travelers passing through Oklahoma each year, one Native American tribe is reinventing the road trip to encourage drivers to take the time to explore the diverse and numerous experiences along the I-35 super corridor.
Chickasaw Nation Governor Bill Anoatubby today announced the launch of Adventure Road, a tourism initiative that spans 130 miles of I-35 from the Red River through Oklahoma City. Adventure Road includes more than 150 travel partners consisting of both tribal and non-tribal businesses.
“We, as Oklahomans, are very fortunate to have this stretch of road with so many unique attractions and experiences,” said Governor Anoatubby. “We believe Adventure Road will help business owners and communities in this region leverage the unique experiences in our backyard to foster growth in tourism and economic development. This should have wide ranging benefits in our area because tourism is an industry which benefits businesses from attractions, hotels, restaurants, retail stores and antique shops to art galleries, convenience stores and farmers’ markets.”
A collaborative effort between the Chickasaw Nation and more than 100 businesses, attractions and organizations, Adventure Road encourages drivers to take the time to explore the diverse destinations located near Interstate 35.
Adventure Road’s boundaries span from the Oklahoma-Texas border to Exit 141 just north of Oklahoma City. It is a network of partners including attractions, restaurants, shops and boutiques, hotels, and bed and breakfasts. Several state lakes and parks also are featured.
Bill Lance, Chickasaw Nation Secretary of Commerce, said he expects Adventure Road to raise awareness for tribally-owned businesses, private businesses, state parks, entertainment venues and other entities. This has been a long-standing commitment of the Chickasaw Nation.
“Through his many years of leadership, Governor Anoatubby has made it a priority to be an active, contributing partner in the communities in which we do business,” Lance said. “Adventure Road is another example of Governor’s vision to increase the economic impact in this large area.”
Lance said more than 150 partners already have committed to being a part of Adventure Road, from the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum, and the RIVERSPORT Adventures in Oklahoma City to the Chickasaw Cultural Center in Sulphur, Bedré Fine Chocolate in Davis, the Pink Pistol in Tishomingo and more.
The Adventure Road initiative was launched with a multimedia campaign in major markets throughout Texas, Kansas and Oklahoma. This effort will run during the major travel planning and tourism season from March to August. The new website – – provides a responsive, mobile-friendly experience that includes breathtaking visuals, highlights information about partners, features collections of adventures, and includes other adventure planning functionality.
