Pearson to Provide $250,000 in New Scholarships and Mentorship Program for Phi Theta Kappa Members

Phi Theta Kappa corporate partner Pearson, the world’s leading learning company, has committed to provide $250,000 in scholarships and other support to help Society members complete both associate and baccalaureate degrees. This is the Society’s first renewable scholarship that follows the student from the associate degree program to completion of a bachelor’s degree.
Beginning in 2015, 10 Pearson Scholars will be selected annually to receive $5,000 scholarships. Each will be provided with a $1,000 scholarship to complete an associate degree, and then an additional $4,000 to complete a bachelor’s degree.
Pearson will also provide a mentoring component to each of the scholars to support them as they complete their degrees. In addition, Pearson Scholars will be recognized in a special advertisement in The Chronicle of Higher Education in fall 2015.
Christin Grissom, Phi Theta Kappa’s Director of Scholarship Operations, said members will be able to apply online through the Society’s Spring Scholarship Application by completing the Leaders of Promise Scholarship application along with an additional essay question for the Pearson Scholarship for Higher Education.
Applicants must be Phi Theta Kappa members in good standing and currently enrolled in a community college full-time or part-time at the time of application. Members who have a minimum 3.5 cumulative grade point average on all college-level coursework and have completed 12-36 semester hours (12-54 quarter hours) of college-level coursework by January 31, 2015, are eligible to apply.
Ideal candidates will be civically engaged and committed to their community through service, demonstrate persistence and leadership, and show academic rigor and excellence. Preference will be given to first-generation students.
“We deeply appreciate Pearson’s willingness to partner with Phi Theta Kappa by providing scholarships that will help our members complete both associate and baccalaureate degree programs,” said Phi Theta Kappa Executive Director and CEO Dr. Rod Risley. “Studies have shown that Phi Theta Kappa members are four times more likely to complete than their community college peers. Financial and mentoring support, like what is being provided by Pearson, will assure their success.”
“Pearson’s SVP, Strategy & Marketing, Annabel Cellini, said, “Through our strategic partnership with Phi Theta Kappa, we look forward to helping and inspiring more learners to make measurable progress by achieving their degree completion goals, which will ultimately position them for long-term success.”
The 2015 Spring Scholarship Application opens March 2, 2015. Applications must be submitted at by 5:00 p.m. CDT, May 15, 2015. For more information, visit the scholarships website at
