Feb. 16, 2007 – The insolvency figures published at the beginning of this month (February) are alarming. They show clearly that not only do a staggering number of people owe money in the UK, but that the proportion of the population that is insolvent has risen dramatically over the last year.
There were nearly 30,000 individual insolvencies in England and Wales in the fourth quarter of last year which was an increase of more than 44% on the same period in 2005. More worrying still is the prediction from a number of leading financial analysts that these figures are set to rise still further.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, one of the contributors to the huge amount of consumer debt at the beginning of the year has been over-spending at Christmas. Many consumers blame store and credit cards for tempting them to borrow over the festive period and then charging them incredibly high interest rates.
